The Dancing Lady and Design Review

Along the waterfront in Prague's New Town, the eye is arrested by the Dancing Lady. This building, seen above, was built a few years ago and caused quite a stir when its design was first made public. Many Praguers, so my students recall, were horrified by its post-modern curves and rhythms, and said it would be totally out of tune with the classical chords that mark most of the architecture in the vicinity.
Well, fast forward to the present: Not only have Praguers got used to the Dancing Lady, she's actually won their hearts. I pass by the Dancing Lady regularly on the way to classes, and almost every time I see tourists stopping to take pictures.
I thought I'd share the story after last week's entry on the controversial National Library. That proposal, known as the Blob, or Octopus, has raised similar concerns about maintaining the character of Prague. But perhaps, as happened with the Dancing Lady, one day Praguers will grow to love the Blob, or whatever name they decide on, and it will share the skyline with Prague Castle and the St. Vitus Cathedral.
But as the Czechs, with their characteristic reserve would say, 'Uvidime.' We'll see.

Now this I love. Reminds me of Hundertwasser - never a straight edge or right angle..as life ought to be lived
