Rest in peace, Mr. Rodoni

The news that an inexplicable traffic accident suddenly took the life of County Supervisor Roger Rodoni late yesterday afternoon makes the often petty political differences that divide the Humboldt community irrelevant this morning. I didn't know Mr. Rodoni very well, but I do know he was very close to his family. Having been through the pain of losing a beloved family member in such a sudden manner, I wish there was something I could do, sitting here at my computer keyboard in Eureka, to help console Mr. Rodoni's family. He was taken from them so swiftly, without any warning, without opportunity to say any parting words. This is something they will have to cope with in the weeks, months, years ahead.

Why does it always seem to take a tragedy like this to remind us that beneath the cortex of our differences we are all united in the same objective? Mr. Rodoni was one of those who took on the largely thankless task of becoming a public figure to help shape the future of our community. Whether you agreed or disagreed with his vision, he deserves our enduring respect and gratitude for his service.

I am thankful that both his opponents in the Second District race have the respect and grace to suspend campaign activities for the time-being, while the community heals from this loss. May you rest in peace, Mr. Rodoni.

Salmon season officially cancelled; Guv signs restoration bill

As had been expected and feared, the Pacific Fishery Management Council banned commercial and recreational fishing for salmon along much of the Pacific Coast, including all of California. Gov. Arnold Schwartzenegger declared an emergency to open the door for federal disaster assistance. And the governor signed a bill sponsored by State Sen. Patricia Wiggins, who represents the North Coast, that provides $5.3 million to fund restoration projects for salmon and steelhead in California.

It's the first time in the Management Council's 22-year history it has completely halted salmon fishing in the zone it manages.

Earlier reports stated that one recreational zone off the mouth of the Klamath River would remain open. It's unclear whether this still applies.

Governor in Eureka this morning; will he sign salmon restoration bill?

Governor Arnold Schwartzenegger is going to be in Eureka today to talk about budget reform. He's scheduled to meet with local elected and business officials at 11 a.m. at the Eureka Women's Club, 1531 J Street. The Gov will hold a "press availability" afterward.

State Sen. Patricia Wiggins' bill to fund salmon and steelhead restoration is on the Guv's desk. There is speculation he will announce he's going to sign the bill at today's appearance.
