The old 'I'm going to cancel my subscription' routine is soooo last century

I have a question for Fortuna City Councilman Dean Glaser. Glaser reportedly said at last night's Council meeting in the Friendly City that he intends to cancel his subscription to the Times-Standard because the T-S had the audacity to suggest that Fortuna Mayor John Campbell, embroiled in a conflict-of-interest scandal with Palco that is being investigated by state authorities, should resign.

Dean: If the FPPC finds Campbell in violation of state law and issues sanctions against him, are you going to restart your subscription to the T-S, and announce it at a City Council meeting?

The Dean Glaser I remember from my days as a newsman covering Fortuna politics was a good man. A bit eccentric, yes. But not petty and knee-jerk.

We'd better not catch you reading the T-S online.

Fortuna City Council meeting have been somewhat backward for sometime

He definitely said he was canceling his subscription. He made a big production out of it, saying he's subscribed for years but was canceling because of the "vicious attack" by the T-S.

He followed that little rant with "support our troops" and "god bless America."

Vicious attack? Oh brother.

There's often a surreal quality to the Fortuna City Council meetings. But they have the best video quality.

I covered Fortuna for more than a year, right at the time that Dean first took office — and he always seemed earnest enough, if sometimes a bit off in his own world.

But it always amuses me when public officials get riled up about editorials that give critical eye in their direction.

Contrary to what some of them may believe, newspapers should not be pretty cheerleaders on the sidelines, only giving words of encouragement and reminding people where the bloodbank is located.

If Dean doesn't understand that, then reading the T-S probably isn't the best thing for his health, anyway.
