HSU Football head coach

Anyone else curious why HSU didn't announce Doug Adkins' resignation earlier? I wish Adkins all the luck in the world, but in terms of HSU's future, it would have been better to announce it a month prior.
They could have had a new guy in there before the new year. Merry Christmas, HSU.
As it stands now, HSU will announce a new coach in late January. If you're at all familiar with the recruiting game, that's like getting onto the field with a minute left and you're down four touchdowns. National signing day is early in February. Yes, HSU will not get any top-flight recruits, but it's still hard to pitch to a head-less program to even second-tier guys.
HSU is saying a selling point for the position, like any head coach, is that person's ability to attract talent. Well, scratch the first year for whoever takes the job, and when HSU's record suffers, it will put him in a hole for the next season, too.
Should it factor into HSU's decision that they can bypass some of these issues by promoting someone from the current coaching staff? They've been recruiting all along, not to mention it could save HSU a boatload of dough.

Saving money and making the quickest decision isn't the way to go as Humboldt State finally becomes an affiliated member of a football conference.

HSU's going to be the only California university among the Great Northwest Conference football schools. So, the next head coach should be someone who can recruit, at least, Northern California high school and JC football. It makes sense to look for a guy who has ties to Humboldt, a winning history, impeccable character and the ability to recruit in California -- where the Oregon schools and Dixie College can't or won't recruit.

There's a lot of football talent between the Oregon border and Fresno. It seems as though HSU has become pretty Oregon-heavy with a co-defensive coordinator and an offensive coordinator with ties to Southern Oregon and Eastern Oregon respectively.

HSU's not going to win recruiting more H-DNL players or by recruiting against Oregon D-II teams. The future of the program hinges on recruiting California players with great character, who know how to win. And, the idea of recruiting Southern California kids is questionable given that Humboldt's campus is 700 miles from places those student-athletes call home.

The candidates you've mentioned with direct ties to HSU are all quality guys -- Mike Mari, Reggie Bolton and Jason White.

Mari's been at Mendocino Community College, as a coordinator and coaching in a league where his travels take him into the Bay Area, Sacramento and the central valley. He's a former HSU player who starred at St. Bernard High School. He'd be a fine hire, as would White with his history at HSU as well as at College of the Redwoods. Bolton was a great player at Humboldt, but the program has changed since he played and coached at HSU.

When Humboldt was interviewing to replace Bud Van Deren, coaches from across the country showed interest. When Fred Whitmire left the top job, top-quality young coaches from all over the U.S. showed interest in the job.
So, even if one takes the three with HSU ties out of the mix, there are coaches who can recruit, win and build character aching for a chance to build a winner and a resume.

HSU football's entering a new era with a exciting things on the horizon. The idea of rushing to get a head coach could do more harm than good. If Humboldt gets what's left when California JC kids and good (not great) high schoolers committ to a college, they'll be in good position to wake up the echoes in Redwood Bowl.

It's probably going to take a California guy who knows Humboldt State to get that job done.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.
