Gluten Free Shopping Is Painful

While we await the results of Taterbug's blood test for Celiac disease and a gluten allergy, I've tried to remove all gluten from her diet. It's pretty cool to see her no longer in pain and to be a much happier little kid. I'm pretty confident we've discovered the cause of her digestional discomfort and I just hope the tests confirm this. It would make life so much easier to know what is making her feel so yucky.
I stopped by Eureka Natural Foods tonight and picked up a few items to tide her over until we get the results. I about had a heart attack when I began looking at the prices. I also quickly realized what a major life change she'll have should she test positive. I've heard that even McDonald's french fries have gluten but I haven't really found a solid answer on that. Thankfully, I've found gluten free brownie and chocolate chip cookie mix to ease her little sweet tooth. And tomorrow morning, she'll dine on gluten free pancakes. We'll make it work.
Any suggestions on local places for the anti-gluten child? Crazy enough, but Amazon.com has some great prices on gluten free groceries. My brown truck boyfriends might be visiting again, and soon.

I got nothing! I'm having to consider a low histamine diet. Apparently, some foods are high in histamine and cause an allergic reaction (like my hives). I'm not looking forward to it.
I hope Taterbug is feeling better.

I'm glad she's feeling so much better, though I know it'll be a huge change for you guys if you have to cut out gluten permanently.
A couple of thoughts--
The CrockPot Lady's blog (http://crockpot365.blogspot.com) has mostly gluten-free recipes since her son has a gluten allergy. She will be coming out with a gluten-free CrockPot cookbook too.
If you're going to be buying a lot of things on Amazon, you might want to think about an Amazon Prime membership (if you don't already have one.) It's $75 a year but I just paid for the third year in a row. (Well, they automatically charged my credit card--so much less painful that way since I kinda forget I'm even paying for it.) Anything you buy that is shipped from Amazon (not 3rd party sellers) gets free 2-day shipping. Well, pretty much anything--the big TV we just ordered doesn't, but that's the only exception I've found. So if you need gluten-free pasta, and that's all you want, and you don't want to wait potentially a week or two for it...you just buy it; it comes in 2 business days; and you don't have to worry about shipping. I love it. I like that if I want to buy a book that is $10.99 I don't have to make the choice of either buying something for $15.01 to get free Super Saver shipping, or paying a shipping cost that is a significant percentage of the book price. I just order it and don't worry about shipping, and sometimes it's even here the next day.

It could be an allergy to food additives. In case the celiac test comes back negative and you find yourself at square one. Food additives are often allergenic, Red 40 for example. When she gets sick, write down the ingredients. Next time she gets sick do the same. Until a pattern emerges. Good luck!

My best friend's child has Celiac's disease. It is a very treatable condition that just take some reworking in the kitchen department. I pray that they figure out what's wrong with your poor little girl and by the way...stay away from those McD's fries!! :)

Also, make sure that you check your toothpaste/ shampoo. Sometimes they have gluten in them. Audrey

Do you have a trader joes?? we buy our pasta from them cause it doesn't have gluten in it.. Not that anyone around here is allergic.. I just figure wth, ya know... I like their prices though... Very reasonable... Also- EarthFare has stuff, Publix (but it is expensive here), there are also a few cook books out there for the gluten free.. I think I have some Trader Joes Blueberry Waffles.. They are YUMMY! (no gluten)... Good luck and I will keep Taters in my prayers..

hello my name is Andrew I am a 36 year old celiac, I have found that the best place to go for gluten free food is not here in Eureka, the prices are high and the selection is not all that great. I go online to the GLuten Free mall, as for the McDonalds fries containing gluten, I think it is because of the oil; that they use. Yes you can live a very long and healthy life. p.s. I was diagnoised in 1972 and I am still kicking today, also get thyroid checkups as there is a correlation between celiac's and thyroid imbalances and cancer.

My daughter has autism. While gluten does not affect her there are many children with autism that are on a gluten free diet. The resources from autism sites are plentiful. Here is one from The Autism Society. It is a Gluten Free Shopping Guide (I included the url). If you GOOGLE: Autism Gluten Free Shopping you will find a lot of information. You might already have this info but I thought I would post it just in case you didn't. With such little shopping here in Humboldt it might be hard to find items so online shopping might be the way.... In fact, I know there are a lot of parents here in Humboldt that have their autistic kids on gluten free.... maybe you guys can bulk shop online to help with shipping and cost breaks.

I found this post helpful because I am starting my 14 month old on a gluten free diet. Still waiting for the celiac disease testing but she IS allergic to gluten, dairy, wheat, soy, nuts, corn, etc. It's really overwhelming. I'll be following along to see how you're doing. And I just may have to consider the Amazon prime membership.

Hello, I have 2 children with Celiac Disease. We have only been dealing with it since Oct. of last year. My son is 9 and looks like he is 5-6yrs, which short stature is his biggest symptom. My daughter is 5 and has no symptoms. They have both had biopsy and were positive. Anyway, I don't know if anyone has told you about the Gluten Free Shopping Guide? It has been a life saver for me. At first I went to all health food stores and spent tons of money. Now I just go to mostly Wal-Mart, Marsh, Kroger, Meijer. I find almost everything I need! I do do the amazon thing sometimes. My kids like the spagetti in the little can, I can't remember what brand it is I just ordered some more and it comes from Austrailia. I am glad your daughter is feeling better. Our finding out was kinda by accident. My son had developed a nervous tick, so I took him to a neurologist and he was below avg. on the growth chart. So they did several test and the Celiac one was one of them. We are doing ok, I am still learning. It is so hard when you go places and try to just be normal and fit in. Oh by the way McDonalds fries are not gluten free. The oil they are fried in has gluten in it. It says it on their website. We try to be safe and we just dont eat out hardly ever. WE really don't have anywhere in our small town that has much they can have. There is a gluten free dinning book you can get also. I got them all off of www.glutenfreemall.com I believe. Well good luck with your long journey!!!
