Let the good times roll

I've been through enough earthquakes to know that they're no joke. In 1992, I was in Humboldt County when the big ones (so to speak) hit, and I saw the telephone polls waving back and forth.

Nevertheless, I can't help the rush I get when an earthquake strikes, and the little voice in the back of my head that screams for more.

Every time an earthquake kicks off, there's that initial moment of surprise, and then the anxious expectation — is this THE BIG ONE? The megathrust? Are we all going to be shaken off the planet like so many fleas off a pissed off dog? When, as has happened so far in my life, it never is the big one, I can't help but feeling a little disappointed.

Ha! I was actually riding a horse in the Ferndale covered riding arena, when the 92 quakes hit. It was wild seeing the power roll through the metal roof. Thankfully, I was sitting on my bed when yesterday's quake hit and then I had to explain it to my five year old. We finally decided that earthquakes are actually burps from the Earth. He seemed to understand and finally quit asking me about it!

Yesterday's little jolt was a tease.

That's what I'm thinking. What's the term? Pre-shock? Is there such a thing?

I have lived through the Nov., '80 big one that knocked down the CR overpass as well as half the chimney of the house I was renting on Dows Prairie. And, both of the April, '92 ones, and several others. Yesterday I was lying in a dentist's chair--luckily no power tools were inside my mouth--about to have my teeth cleaned when the 3.7 rolled. Burps from earth, I like it.

Foreshadowing?

Thats the stuff that scares me.
