On Scientology
I can't believe what people believe. I like science fiction, but the mythology behind scientology goes a little bit far for my taste.
Here's my experience from scientology. As a naturally curious 12-year-old, I read Dianetics thought it could be an answer to all my problems. I called the number on the back page for more information, and was promptly told that to take more classes, and receive more info, I needed more money. The operator then told me to get my parent's credit card and come back to the phone.
Curious, but not stupid, I asked my dad if I could use his card. When he found out why, he got on the horn and yelled few words I can repeat here at the the scientologist on the other end. That was the end of my relationship with scientology.
But I read with interest now that a number of computer geeks and hackers have declared war on the "religion," saying they will remove the Tom Cruises of the world from the Internet. Can they do that? Can they even say that? Well, they are. And they've put out a spooky little manifesto video to boot:

I agree these wack jobs are out of thier mind.
On the Humbold Herald I got caught up ridiculing scientology. It is a little easy.
I found more crap than I could imagine. Early LRH quotes about wanting to create a religion because that is where the money is, speculation about LRH being killed in a coup, info about operation snowflake and operation freakout, my buddy Xenu flying the DC-8s to volcanoes that didn't even exist 75 million years ago, and on and on and on.
What kills me the most is that people blindly fall right into a belief structure that is clearly based in LRH's current era and has no historical credibility. At least Krishnas have history behind them.
Ok, what kills me even more is that everyone who believes they lived a past life was someone REALLY special in that life. They are never a garbage collector or a sick kid that died of the measles. LRG seems to think he lived four consecutive lives as a racecar driver. Yeah, a highly advanced society capable of intergalactic travel is racing 50's era automobiles.
The clambake site (xenu.net) has a lot of good info including insider dirt from ex-OT3s and such so it is worth taking a look.
It is also worth checking out 'cult' on wiki, linking around, and then judging the information against scientology. Some sociologists don't like the use of 'cult' as it is pejorative, and hence serves no sociological purpose, but in regards to scientology pejorative is probably being too kind.
Oh yeah, since I talked about Xenu before our inner thetan was ready to learn about it (meaning pay up 19,5000 bucks baby!) we are in immenant danger.
But I am being a bit SP, and therefor open to 'fair game'.

It's strange, but I somehow got bit with the Scientology bug recently. Sounds like you're suffering from the same affliction. I just can't seem to stop researching this strange little religion. And then this creepy video comes out, from a group of renegades who I can't help but root for. Did you happen to see the BBC report on Scientology? Now that is creepy.

AARRGH! I just got, for the first time ever, a mailing from the Scientologists advertising a $7K dianetics cruise. I admit to taking two classes from them many years ago in LA but this has to be a mass mailing, expensive paper too. I found Dianetics to be a very useful book. For years I used under my monitor to raise it to proper height. Really, I'm wondering if others locally got the maiing and if this means they're becoming active here. Hope not.
